Volunteers Bring the "Magic" to MSS
Jessica Moore, who volunteers at MSS Shoreview, is a perfect example of the unique impact that outside community members can have on our programs. Stopping by twice a week, she leads a Harry Potter book club for a spellbound audience of people in our programs and staff. In nicer weather, they even take their reading outside to Shoreview’s patio and garden space.
Jessica discovered MSS while searching for volunteer opportunities for a young adult group at her church. The solo position at Shoreview wasn't right for her group, but it was too interesting for Jessica to pass up. "Harry Potter?" she remembers saying. "I love Harry Potter!"
Since Jessica started volunteering a year ago, the book club has already completed four books in the series. For people in our programs, Jessica's reliable presence each week—and the return of their favorite characters—is both engaging and comforting. "Everybody there is really friendly. The more I came in, the more people recognized my voice, the more they asked me to sit with them. That's been a lot of fun."
Volunteering has always been a meaningful part of Jessica's life. In addition to MSS, Jessica also volunteers regularly at her church and other local organizations supporting people with disabilities. She even lettered in volunteering in high school. "I really enjoy that side of it, giving back to the community and meeting new people," she says.
The book club is currently eyeing Percy Jackson as their next series—just as soon as Voldemort is defeated. Whatever story is being told, we're just glad to have volunteers like Jessica to share it with us. "It's a great community be a part of," she says. We agree!
